The average HVAC Professional has a long list of frequently asked questions. Providing concise and clear answers to every question benefits everyone. The following are frequently asked by homeowners:

What Does a Furnace Filter Do?

A traditional furnace filter is a part that is fixed to the induction side of a furnace. The duty or role of the filter consists of trapping and retaining airborne particles and dust. These items have the ability to damage heating coils, blower motors and other furnace equipment. A clean and efficient filter has the role of improving air quality because it will capture pollen, smoke, pet dander, mold and much more. The filter has the job of preventing respiratory and allergic problems for the members of the household.

Filters: Wash or Replace?

Many furnace filters can be washed, however this could be an impractical method because the filter will not always be cleaned thoroughly. A disposable filter can, easily, be replaced after the recommended use time. A disposable filter can be easily installed and will offer efficiency. A permanent furnace filter is also a cost effective option. It depends on the type of filter. Some are disposable and others are permanent

Damage of Old Filters

You may be wondering what happens if your disposable filter does not get replaced on a regular basis? If you neglect to replace your furnace filter it may restrict airflow and cause damage to your entire furnace system. A disposable filter will come with a recommended “use” time frame. The manufacturer will provide replacement information or a technician can assess with a maintenance check of your furnace system. There are even programs to order your filter online and have it autoship when it is time to replace it. That way you don’t have to worry about remembering when to change the filter!

Furnace Filter Efficiency

If you are wondering if you can measure the efficiency of your air filters, the answer might be “yes”. Filters are rated based on how efficient they should be by being assigned a MERV rating. This stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The rating is determined once the filter has been put through a strict test. MERV is a universal value will will allow a consumer to compare filters. The actual rating is calculated and will measure efficiency by numbers. A high rating will let you know that your efficiency is high. A lower number alerts you to lower efficiency levels. The MERV value can be as high as 12. It can be valued at a number one which indicates low efficiency
